My journey as a Full Stack Developer

Struggles with Live Coding

I was pleasantly surprised when I learned that I had passed the mock technical interview with Skilled Inc. While I studied a week in advance, there was still some doubt that it wasn’t enough. Having spent the past several months coding heavily with JavaScript and React, a lot of the original concepts and definitions of Ruby that I learned were still a bit rusty to me. I decided to choose Ruby because it would test my abilities of earlier concepts and I would also understand what I could improve on before starting the job search.

Reel 2 Real: React-Redux Portfolio Project

When I first reached this project, it was a difficult situation because I was also balancing the challenges I faced with JavaScript. Everything I learned up to this point was crucial in becoming a successful programmer. I went through days of preparation including code challenges on Code Wars, Studying the Rails, Javascript, and React-Redux docs and guides. It’s one thing to have these as resources, but another to apply them to an app of this magnitude.

Rails with JS Project: Expanding Renecades

One of the greatest challenges going into this project was creating and testing all of the JS functions to expand Renecades. My only experience with Javascript before joining the Flatiron was when I was a Journalism student, but it was more a novice level. Going into this unit, I didn’t expect the many obstacles I would unravel, particularly because a lot of the labs that I forked and cloned from GitHub didn’t always function properly. Different versions of gems and trouble with the compatibility of IDE and Atom made it more difficult. It was quite a long journey to get to this point, but I think once I took advantage of Flatiron’s resources more, I learned a great deal about myself and my ability to code.

The Itinerary Hub: The Sinatra App

When I started to brainstorm ideas for this project, I wanted to do something that showcased another interest of mine. I decided to incorporate my interest of history and traveling for the Sinatra App where users could build an itinerary of destinations. It’s been a very long road to get here, but I’m continuing the journey. I had less anxiety surrounding this project since I became more comfortable with the activerecord, sinatra and SQL concepts a lot quicker than CLI.
